Interview with a Box Owner: Cameron from Beacon Book Box

Hello everyone! Today, I am so excited to bring you a very special interview with Cameron from Beacon Book Box!

If you haven’t already heard of this fun bookish company, let me tell you a bit about it. Beacon Book Box was founded by Cameron when he was only 14! Together with his parents, they formed Beacon Book Box, a monthly book subscription box that’s been making tremendous strides in the book community. In just around a year and a half, they’ve gone from small brand new box to a major player in the book subscription box game.

Let’s get into this exclusive interview:

Q1: What inspired you to start Beacon Book Box? How did you come up with the name?

A1: My love of reading inspired me to start Beacon! It has been a hobby I have had since I was a baby (literally since Mama and Papa Beacon read to me every night) and was one I wanted to continue with. We came up with the name at a brainstorming session, citing lighthouse beacons as our main source of inspiration 🙂

Q2: How do you pick your monthly books?

A2: We select books for our monthly boxes by reading Advanced Reader’s Copies (ARCs) and manuscripts sent to us by publishers.  I read so many ARCs to figure out which book would be the best one to put in that months box (we try to stay within 10 days give or take of the publish date from our shipping dates).

Q3: What’s it like being a young business owner?

A3: It is a learning experience.  LOL  Everyday!  LOL  It takes more time than I thought it would, but it is so worth it.  I need to thank my family for their guidance and support.  Without them, I couldn’t do this alone.  It takes a lot of time because I am trying to balance this job and high school (and my personal life) and sometimes it is easy to do and other days, it is a struggle.  But, it is worth it at the end of the day.  If I were to offer any advice to a young entrepreneur, it would be to start small and always listen to others.  There is so much to learn from people who have experience in the business arena and a good support system, that if you listen to the right people, you can do anything you want.

Q4: What was your favorite box to put together?

A4: Our CAPTURING THE DEVIL and FIVE DARK FATES Special Edition Boxes were my two favorite boxes to curate so far! These were our bestselling boxes to date and are full of so many amazing items. I loved working directly with the authors, Kerri Maniscalco and Kendare Blake.  It is really an honor to have these authors take their time to share ideas/items with me and to talk about their books and what we are putting in their boxes.  They both have been so wonderful to me and I appreciate their input and the time that they allowed me to share with them.

Q5: You recently started including exclusive dust jackets, (which are beautiful, by the way!) first for The Lunar Chronicles, and now for Caraval. What inspired this decision, and will these covers become a regular monthly “collectible” in your boxes?

A5: We asked our subscribers what they would like to see (or not see) in our boxes.  We truly listen to our subscribers.  We have made some major changes and additions due to the suggestions of our subscribers.  We say it every week on our live, if you have an idea, a suggestion, an artist, an item or a vendor that you would like us to work with, please let us know. 

Q6: How do you choose your vendors and artists?

A6: It is a tough process. LOL  We work on a very tight budget every month so we try to stay within our budget and get items and artists that our subscribers will enjoy.  We try to work with many vendors and a variety of artists.  Many of the artists are booked for commissions months out, so it is sometimes tough to get the artist that we think would be the best for the item.  We also look to our subscribers to let us know who they would like to see and to let us know if they know of any artists/vendors that might be interested in working with us.

Q7: What makes Beacon Book Box different than other book boxes?

A7: I think the one thing that sticks out with us is that we truly are a family business.  Papa Beacon and I do the majority of the work but we run many ideas by Mama Beacon and she has a different view than Papa B and I (and it helps!)  LOL  Also, my sister Faith has been amazing!  She puts every box together for us, stacks them, helps with inventory, packing boxes and she has been helping out lately with some Instagram tasks.  

Q8: What are some of your future plans/goals for Beacon Book Box? 

A8: Our goal/plan for BBB is to continue to grow.  Continue to offer the best customer service to our subscribers and to maintain our reputation as a fun, goofy, family that loves to share our lives with our subscribers and new members of “our family”.

Q9: Anything else you’d like to add?

A9: People may not know that I was 14 when I started this company.  Of course my family has helped me out tremendously, but I want to personally thank everyone that our family business has touched.  It means the world to me that so many have accepted me into this amazing community and I have learned so much from so many of the bookstagrammers and other subscription box owners.  I have made lifelong friends, have shared so much of what we do with so many on a daily basis, that everyone really does feel like family to me.  I just hope that everyone knows how blessed I am to have found this community and to be able to share my love and passion for books with so many.  I am thankful beyond words.  I love everyone!!
