Thoughts: *Contains minor spoilers for The Cruel Prince*

Have you ever read a book with a character so awful that you can’t even begin to understand their thought process? Well, for me, that was Taryn from The Cruel Prince. This companion novella, The Lost Sisters, is written from her POV, and is basically an apology to her twin sister, Jude, who is the protagonist of The Cruel Prince and the rest of the trilogy.

Basically, this novella contains Taryn’s apology and justification for her actions in The Cruel Prince. I won’t say too much, but it made me hate Taryn a lot less and made me hate Locke a lot more.

To speak to the writing itself, it was sort of written in second person, addressed to Jude. I was a bit put off by it at first, but came to like it as I realized that it could be read like a letter. I liked that Jude and Taryn both have distinct voices. Taryn often breaks off into little asides and tells stories (I wonder if this was influenced by our favorite lover-of-stories, Locke?) which always end up connecting back to whatever she’s talking about. Her voice was nicely written, and I actually enjoyed being in her head for this short little tale.

I actually found myself wishing for more of Taryn’s narration, as it was quite pleasant to read. This might be an unpopular opinion, but I think that I could identify a bit with Taryn. Not with her awful betrayal of her sister, but in her desire to belong and be loved. Both Taryn and Jude want to find their place in Faerie, but they go about it different ways. In The Cruel Prince, I could see what drove Jude to do what she did, and now I see what drove Taryn. I still don’t agree with what she did, but I see why she did it. Also, having read both perspectives, I can see why they both fell for Locke. He’s a charmer, for sure.

All in all, I really enjoyed this glimpse into Taryn’s head, perhaps a bit more than The Cruel Prince itself!
